Gor Mahia assistant captain Michael Kibwage has backed newly promoted Migori Youth to make a strong impression in the FKF Premier League, describing the club as a side capable of taking the top flight by storm.
The experienced defender was impressed by Migori’s organisation, squad depth and approach during their Green Legacy Cup clash against Gor Mahia at Nyayo National Stadium, where the two sides played out a thrilling 2-2 draw before the reigning champions prevailed 4-3 on post-match penalties.
Migori twice took the lead through new signings Dennis Oguta and Philemon Nyakwaka, only for Gor Mahia to fight back on both occasions through Paul Odhiambo and Ebenezer Asssiafu, forcing the contest into a shootout.Despite missing out on the trophy, the National Super League (NSL) champions earned plenty of praise from Kibwage, who believes their performance was a strong indication of what they could offer once the league begins.
“It was a nice experience facing Migori Youth FC, who had a good campaign last season, which saw them crowned champions of the second tier and promoted. If you look at their team currently, they are very organised and building a strong squad for the Premier League. They gave us a very hard time in the game,” Kibwage said.

The former Sofapaka captain also believes the demanding encounter will benefit Gor Mahia as they prepare for the new season, particularly their return to continental football in the CAF Champions League.”We really appreciate them for the good performance, which will also help us going forward in the CAF Champions League and the league itself. I rate them highly, and I am backing them to maintain consistency in their debut season, keep the fire burning and achieve their targets,” he added.
