Michael Olunga Football Academy (MOFA) have handed over the reins to veteran tactician Gilbert Selebwa as they intensify their pursuit of promotion to the FKF Premier League.
Selebwa has won the race for the vacant head coach’s position ahead of Soy United’s Jeffers Odongo after weeks of deliberation by the club’s hierarchy. The experienced coach replaces former Gor Mahia defender Charles Bruno, who occupied the role before leaving prior to the end of last season. Selebwa had his media day duties at the club’s premises in Homa Bay on Wednesday.
The veteran coach arrives with a reputation for building competitive sides and steering clubs towards the promised land. His coaching journey has seen him guide AFC Leopards back to the Kenyan top flight in 2009 while also earning promotion with Congo United.
Most recently, Selebwa was at the helm of Mombasa United during the 2025/26 National Super League (NSL) campaign, where he inherited a team that had narrowly escaped relegation the previous season.Like a master craftsman patiently chiselling away at stone, he quickly moulded the Coastal side into one of the league’s most formidable outfits through disciplined football and an unwavering winning mentality.
Under his stewardship, Mombasa won 19 of their 28 league matches, drew once, and lost eight.STARS ABROAD: Harambee Stars midfielder keeps UEFA Champions League dream alive with Armenian sideThe remarkable run left them joint top of the standings on 58 points alongside Migori Youth with 10 matches remaining, placing the club firmly on course for a historic promotion to the FKF Premier League.
However, in one of the season’s most surprising developments, Selebwa parted ways with the side in April 2026 following an internal performance review, just days after a defeat to Kibera Black Stars. He later took charge of Vihiga United, where he continued to add to his wealth of experience before attracting interest from MOFA.
The team’s rise through the Kenyan football pyramid has been equally impressive.MOFA earned a place in the second division ahead of the 2024/25 season through a merger after narrowly missing promotion on the pitch a year earlier, when they fell 3-0 to Fortune Sacco in the FKF Division One promotion playoff under then-coach Kassim Otieno. For their maiden campaign in the second tier, the club appointed Alfred Chole as head coach, with Lloyd Wahome serving as his assistant.
Chole departed before the end of the season, paving the way for Wahome to step into the spotlight. Under his guidance, the team, powered by Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga, enjoyed a commendable debut campaign, finishing seventh in the NSL standings.Following the expiry of Wahome’s contract, the club turned to Bruno ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Bruno oversaw the greater part of the campaign before leaving before its conclusion, with assistant coach Fabian Hosea taking charge for the remaining fixtures.
