Former Kenya U20 defender Joshua Onyango has revealed that the desire to revive his career and position himself for another move abroad was the driving force behind his decision to join KCB FC during the just-concluded transfer window.

The lanky centre-back, who recently joined the Bankers, says he opted to return to the FKF Premier League after a challenging six-month stint in Botswana, where he turned out for Scottland FC.McCarthy names 3 new faces in Harambee Stars’ provisional squad for 2027 AFCON qualifiersSpeaking to KCB’s media team, Onyango admitted that his spell abroad did not go according to plan and that he felt returning to the Kenyan top flight was the right step towards rebuilding his career.“KCB is a good team. I came back home because I had unfinished business. I wanted to return to the local scene and revive my career because I feel I was not ready to be at my best abroad,” Onyango said.

The former Gor Mahia defender left the record league champions midway through last season after securing a move to Botswana. However, his stay at Scottland FC lasted only six months before he made a surprise return to Kenya and completed a switch to KCB. Onyango believes the Bankers provide the ideal environment for him to regain his best form, pointing to the club’s facilities and professional setup as key factors behind his decision.“I chose KCB because they have facilities for a top club to be able to make a player thrive,” he added.

The defender, who is also a product of Kenya’s national youth setup, having represented the Rising Stars, is now setting his sights on using the 2026/27 campaign as a springboard for another opportunity overseas. Onyango, who previously lifted the league title with Gor Mahia during the 2022/23 season, is determined to make the most of his return to the domestic scene before once again testing himself outside the country.

“This season I want to give it my all and, God willing, if all works out, I will be aiming to make a move outside the country,” he stated. His arrival is expected to strengthen KCB’s defensive department as coach Robert Matano continues to assemble a squad capable of mounting a serious challenge for domestic honours.

Onyango is among several high-profile additions made by the Bankers during the transfer window as they seek to improve on last season’s campaign and push for a maiden league title since the club’s establishment. With his experience at Gor Mahia, exposure in Botswana and international youth pedigree, Onyango will be expected to play a central role in tightening KCB’s backline as the Bankers embark on their quest for a historic league triumph.
