Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru has set his sights on a historic double, with the Nakuru-based side targeting both the Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup titles this season.
Despite finishing third in the 2025/26 Kenya Cup standings, Oilers remain firmly in contention and will face KCB Rugby in a high-stakes semifinal at the KCB Sports Club. At the same time, they have booked their place in the Enterprise Cup semifinals, keeping alive their dream of lifting both trophies in a single campaign.
Their Enterprise Cup charge gained momentum following a commanding 60-15 victory over Buffaloes RFC, setting up a mouthwatering semifinal clash against arch-rivals Kabras RFC. The upcoming tie will be their second meeting this year, having last faced off on Saturday, 14 March at the ASK Kakamega Showground, where Kabras secured a 24-13 win.
It will also serve as a rematch of the 2025 Enterprise Cup final, in which Kabras edged Oilers 33-12.Lessons learned from 2026 Enterprise Cup quarterfinalsSpeaking after the dominant win over the Buffaloes, Weru admitted that while the result was encouraging, the bigger focus remains on consistency and improvement.
A fantastic game of rugby, an intercountry battle. We played an opponent we did not know what to expect in terms of tactics, so it was sort of working blindly. But again, for us, it was a week where we needed to redeem ourselves from a disappointing week coming from the game against Kabras. The bigger picture is trying to make sure that we improve the areas that we struggled with, especially the set pieces, making sure that we can compete and defend well, and at the same time apply pressure.
The former Kenya 7s star further acknowledged that recent performances against top sides have not met expectations, but insisted the team was focused on correcting their shortcomings ahead of the crucial fixtures.
We have struggled to swing in our performances against the big boys. For us, it is to improve and make sure that by the time we are playing the next match, we are ticking the boxes that we need to. This is very important for us, and we are looking at the main picture, which is to win this competition and the Kenya Cup.
