War of the Roses ends in a draw as United barely escape defeat against Leeds

Many consider it one of the oldest derbies in England and in football in general, claiming it’s a rivalry rooted directly in the (in)famous War of the Roses. Whether it’s a true story or just a legend, one thing is certain – the clash between Leeds United and Manchester United is always much more than just a football match.Today’s duel at Elland Road was no exception. However, unlike the aforementioned war, which the House of Lancaster ultimately won through Henry Tudor’s win over the Yorkist king Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field, today neither side emerged victorious – 1-1.Martinez offers olive branch to Man Utd chiefs after explosive Wilcox criticismYet the match itself resembled a genuine battle, marked by fierce duels, physical play, and two goals – the first scored by Bryan Mbeumo in the 35th minute and the second courtesy of Dominic Calvert-Lewin 16 minutes later. In general, Leeds were a better team and had control of the game, but failed to take all three points. United did maintain their unbeaten run at Elland Road that started 24 years ago, but their supporters won’t be satisfied with a draw and a subpar display, and Michael Carrick may be the first to pay the price.A turbulent period at Old Trafford seems to be upon us.#Manchester United and #Leeds share points! 49 days without a win in Premier League for the Red Devils. Who’s been your Man of the Match? https://t.co/dW0RCnCmRj— Nino max (@NinomaxMUFC) October 18, 2026 If anyone expected the clash at Elland Road to be anything other than a full-blooded battle – or a war, if your wish – they couldn't have been more wrong. They were given an early taste of what was to come, as referee Darren England showed two yellow cards in the opening 20 minutes – to United captain Bruno Fernandes and Leeds defender Gabriel Gudmundsson. The home side dominated the match, but neither team looked particularly threatening in front of goal. The first real chances came midway through the first half, when Senne Lammens superbly kept out Nico Elvedi's header, while Bryan Mbeumo fired narrowly wide from a promising position.Truth or lie? Carrick: "We moved on"And just when the Red Devils appeared to be on the ropes, struggling to keep their opponents at bay, they stunned the packed Elland Road crowd, breaking the deadlock and heading into the break with the lead.A three-man move was all it took to break the deadlock: Amad Diallo picked out Youri Tielemans on the right flank, the Belgian delivered a superb cross, and Mbeumo made no mistake this time, firing United in front in the 35th minute.Bryan Mbeumo has OPENED THE SCORING for Manchester United in this heated clash against Leeds. 🔴🔥 Lovely work from Youri Tielemans who TURNED PROVIDER with a brilliant assist! https://t.co/gOY7EMBBrU— RazedFootball (@RazedFootball) October 18, 2026 However, Daniel Farke's crew wouldn't have been unbeaten at home in all competitions for nearly nine months if it allowed to be disheartened often. Leeds players fight until the last second no matter what and that approach paid them off just six minutes into the second half.Set pieces once again proved to be Man United's Achilles' heel, as the home side's corner kick led to Tarik Muharemovic's header and Dominic Calvert-Lewin's ruthless finish from close range, which injected a new energy into both the players in white on the pitch and the Leeds' fans in the stands.Dominic Calvert-Lewin loves scoring at Elland Road. The England international's seventh goal in as many matches at Leeds United's ground draws his team level against Manchester United. Just what Daniel Farke's side would have wanted at the start of the second half. https://t.co/KOoLYmVANs— The Athletic | Football (@TheAthleticFC) October 18, 2026 Despite the much better display in the remaining 40 minutes, the Whites failed to score a decisive goal and take all three points, as the Red Devils somehow managed to defend their fortress and avoid a defeat. In the end, the impression is that neither side can be pleased with the outcome. Leeds defended their home, but deserved more, especially considering their performance, while United can never be happy with a draw against one of their fiercest rivals.PREMIER LEAGUE – MATCHDAY 7SaturdayEverton – Chelsea 0-2 (0-0)/Neto 46, 90+1/Brentford – Liverpool 1-2 (1-0)/Lewis-Potter 44 – Munoz 62, Isak 70/Fulham – Hull 1-0 (1-0)/Iwobi 33/Man.City – Ipswich 3-2 (2-1)/Foden 19, Haaland 34, 69 – Maeda 21, Flemming 90(p)/Newcastle – Aston Villa 0-1 (0-1)/Manzambi 36/SundayBournemouth – Sunderland 2-0 (1-0)/Tavernier 6, Evanilson 48/Brighton – Crystal Palace 5-0 (3-0)/Canvot 4 og, Gomez 7, Ayari 10, Kostoulas 49, Hinshelwood 84/Leeds – Manchester United 1-1 (0-1)/Calvert-Lewin 51 – Mbeumo 35/18.30: (5.80) Nott.Forest (3.80) Arsenal (1.62) Monday22.00: (1.50) Tottenham (4.30) Coventry (6.50)***odds are subject to change***
