A look into Tanzania’s transport game changer ahead of 2027 AFCON [PHOTOS]

For AFCON PAMOJA 2027, transport will be part of the match-day experience. When Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda host the Africa Cup of Nations, supporters will move between hotels, airports, fan zones, training grounds and stadiums. In Dar es Salaam, the Dar Rapid Transit (DART) system, commonly known as Mwendokasi, could become central to that movement.Download our Mozzart Sport App for more newsCAF and the three host governments have identified transport efficiency as a priority alongside security, hospitality, medical services and stadium readiness. That gives DART a specific AFCON role: moving large crowds safely and predictably before and after matches at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. How DART can move AFCON supportersDART already operates at a scale relevant to tournament planning. Its 2023/24 annual report recorded an average of 4.44 million passenger journeys per month, equivalent to roughly 148,000 journeys per day.The report also recorded a decline from the previous year, partly because the planned number of buses was not available.##NAJAVA_MECA_9978981##That warning matters. AFCON will create concentrated demand, with supporters arriving and leaving within narrow windows while teams, officials, media and volunteers travel on separate schedules.DART's existing network provides a foundation. It combines dedicated BRT corridors with trunk and feeder services.Articulated buses have a stated capacity of 155 passengers, while rigid buses can carry up to 90 and feeder buses up to 80.Those vehicles are designed for high-volume movement along defined routes, exactly the kind of demand created by a match day.DART's official website lists 21.5 kilometres of BRT infrastructure as completed and another 42.9 kilometres under construction. If those projects are delivered and connected before the tournament, Dar es Salaam could have a substantially larger public transport network when AFCON supporters arrive. How the expansion supports AFCON venuesDART's expansion is important because AFCON travel will not be limited to one central corridor.Phase Three covers a 23.6-kilometre corridor connecting the city centre with areas including Julius Nyerere International Airport and Gongo la Mboto.Another branch links Kariakoo Gerezani, Lindi, Shaurimoyo and Uhuru to Buguruni. The project includes dedicated BRT lanes, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, three major terminals, 32 smaller stations and feeder facilities.Phase Four adds 30.1 kilometres, extending from the city centre towards Tegeta, with a branch from Mwenge through Ubungo along Sam Nujoma Road.It includes two major terminals, 20 bus stations and 10 feeder stations.Phase Five is planned at 27.6 kilometres, with corridors extending from Ubungo Junction towards the Dar es Salaam Port and other areas.FUFA announces improved Uganda Cranes incentives ahead of AFCON 2027It includes 32 stations, six feeder stations and three bus terminals. For AFCON, these projects could improve links between accommodation areas, the airport, central Dar es Salaam and the stadium. They could also reduce pressure on private vehicles and taxis during peak periods. How DART can serve Benjamin Mkapa StadiumBenjamin Mkapa Stadium is one of Tanzania's designated AFCON centres. The country's preparations include upgrades to stadiums, training facilities, roads and supporting infrastructure. The transport challenge is therefore broader than getting fans through the stadium gates. It is connecting the venue to the city before and after matches.A match-day plan could use terminals and feeder routes to bring supporters into the BRT network, then move them along dedicated corridors for part of their journey.Park-and-ride arrangements, temporary shuttle links and controlled drop-off points could further reduce congestion around the stadium. The World Bank has previously noted that Dar es Salaam's BRT system provides high-capacity buses on dedicated lanes, helping reduce congestion and travel time.It has also described a long-term plan involving approximately 140 kilometres of BRT corridors across six phases. That infrastructure gives AFCON organisers an advantage: a system designed to move passengers collectively rather than relying entirely on individual cars. Why integration will matter during AFCONDART's value will depend on how well it connects with the rest of Dar es Salaam's transport system.Supporters will not all stay beside BRT stations. Many will arrive at the airport, use hotels in different districts, travel from fan zones, or depend on daladala services.DART's trunk-and-feeder model can help connect those journeys, but only if routes, fares, schedules, and interchange points are clear.Recent changes around Mbagala show the direction of travel. From July 2026, daladala services in the area were directed towards the BRT terminal, with DART and LATRA describing the move as an effort to improve integration, reduce congestion and make connections easier. That approach could be adapted for AFCON corridors and match-day operations. The goal would not be to put every supporter on a BRT bus.It would be to make buses, daladalas, terminals and pedestrian routes function as one tournament network. The AFCON testDART's 2023/24 report makes fleet availability a central concern. Before AFCON, organisers will need confidence that enough buses can operate at high frequency during simultaneous arrival and departure peaks.Station management will also matter. International supporters will need clear signs, simple ticketing, route information, multilingual assistance and safe pedestrian access.Teams, officials and media will require separate, reliable movements that do not interfere with public services.Kenyan duo to work under new coach in Tanzania as changes hit new clubCAF has stressed transport efficiency for fans, teams, officials, media and investors.DART could therefore become part of AFCON's operating infrastructure, not merely a normal city service. The foundations exist: millions of monthly passenger journeys, expanding corridors, new terminals and feeder routes. The decisive question is whether those assets are integrated into a detailed Dar es Salaam match-day plan.During AFCON 2027, Mwendokasi could determine how easily supporters reach Benjamin Mkapa Stadium and how smoothly they get home.
