In recent years, there haven’t been too many Olympique Marseille fans’ favourites, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is one of them. The former Gabon international had a colourful career and ended up in Marseille late in his career and stayed only two seasons, but it was enough for him to make friends with the loyal supporters from the south of France.
He played there in the 2023/24 season and then returned for a second spell after a brief period in Saudi Arabia. But he also lasted only one season and was sold to famous Deportivo La Coruña. The reason was mainly a financial one, as the club is in trouble and has to comply with UEFA rules. And I wasn’t going to go against the club’s wishes. I’m not someone who likes to cause trouble or be a burden. I think the club already has enough problems” he said during a video press conference, according to reports in the newspaper L’Equipe.

Last season was a disaster nearly from the beginning. From Adrien Rabiot and Jonathan Rowe fight, to president’s resignation and Roberto De Zerbi’s departure, and the bad news finished with a disappointing fifth place in Ligue 1. “It’s been a very, very trying season. The context was quite unusual with all the changes that took place at the club. I think everyone bears some responsibility for this unsuccessful season: us, the players, but also the staff and management. Communication didn’t necessarily work between the two sides. That’s how it is, it happens. When you’re in Marseille, you have to manage to create a bubble and not let yourself be influenced by anything outside. That’s what we didn’t do last season and it cost us dearly” he confessed.
