American billionaire and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has acquired a minority stake in Liverpool, the famous English club has confirmed. Liverpool’s owners have agreed to sell around a third of the club to a consortium that includes Jeff Bezos, who will become part of the investment group led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and a former shareholder in Championship club Queens Park Rangers. The final agreement means that some of the richest people in the world will become co-owners of Liverpool. But, apart from that, Bezos was given the opportunity to buy the controlling stakes in the club.Jeff Bezos storms into Liverpool ownership with 30% stakeFenway Sports Group (FSG), which owns a majority stake in the club, wanted to complete the deal by the end of the week, and the final agreement has been reached relatively fast after the initial news broke out. Liverpool is valued at between six billion and seven billion dollars, while the minority stake — around 30% of the shares, if it can even be called a minority package at that level — is reportedly valued at approximately two billion. What wasn’t said however was an option for Bezos to become a majority owner.Outshining Van Dijk to forced exit: Bureaucracy costs Liverpool their wonderkidThe Athletic revealed, according to their sources at the club, that there is a mechanism that could see the consortium purchase a controlling stake in the club in the next 12 months. Those sources stress, however, that the language around this element of the transaction does not constitute a commitment, so it is merely an option that could lead to further investment as opposed to something that is set in stone. Sixteen years ago, FSG bought Liverpool for around 400 million dollars, at a time when the club was facing serious financial difficulties. Since then, they have increased the Reds’ value roughly 15-fold, meaning they have made a substantial profit from this minority sale. Previously, investment fund Dynasty Equity acquired a small stake when Liverpool’s ownership structure changed in 2023. As for Bezos, Forbes estimates his fortune at around 280 billion dollars, placing him among the richest people in the world. Liverpool’s new vice-chairman, Amit Bhatia, is also a billionaire and currently runs investment company A.B. Capital, which invests across various sectors, including technology, media, real estate, retail and healthcare. He is also the head of the consortium.##NAJAVA_MECA_9894228##
