Bruno after disaster: “It’s a decision from the staff to not press”

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has raised questions over Michael Carrick’s approach after the Red Devils suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat in Como in the Champions League.United endured another disastrous night, with their disappointing campaign reaching yet another low point. Carrick, who admitted to feeling 'anger' over his team's display, has now overseen five defeats in his 11 matches in charge.Manchester drowned in the Como lakeFollowing Lisandro Martinez’s recent criticism of the club's hierarchy, particularly director of football Jason Wilcox, Fernandes has also voiced his frustration with United's cautious approach. The Portuguese midfielder questioned why his side once again allowed their opponents too much freedom rather than putting them under pressure."It's a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, wait for them, but sometimes when you give space to these teams they get confidence."When asked directly whether Carrick had made the wrong tactical choices, Fernandes refused to deliver a personal verdict, instead pointing responsibility towards the coaching staff."That's on the manager and staff to say, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable. As you saw with Como, the centre back was coming to mark me in my own half. We need to do that as a team but we were unable to."🚨🗣️ Bruno Fernandes calling out Carrick & the backroom staff: "It's a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, wait for them, but sometimes when you give space to these teams they get confidence." 🗣️ Bruno on whether he is saying Michael Carrick got his tactics wrong: "That's on the manager and staff to see, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable. As you saw with them [Como], the centre-back was coming to mark me in my own half. We need to do that as a team but we were unable to." 🗣️ Bruno: "A team that plays through the middle with small connections, if you give them too much time and space then they can hurt you out wide." https://t.co/Bt9bGkuzer— UtdXclusive (@UtdXclusive) October 21, 2026 Fernandes' frustration was also apparent when Carrick decided to take him off midway through the second half. The United captain shook his head as he walked towards the dugout, seemingly unhappy with the decision.Carrick was subsequently confronted with his skipper's remarks and offered a pointed response, suggesting that the team's shortcomings could not be explained by tactics alone. The United manager argued that his players had failed to show the necessary work rate on the pitch."We actually were half-pressed man-to-man in the second half and then conceded a goal from that,’ he said. ‘There's a little bit on whatever system you play, whatever tactics you play, but if you don't run – you don't run forward and you don't run back – you aren’t going to win."19.45: (1.47) Juventus (4.70) Rennes (6.50)
