Substitute Amad Diallo emerged as the hero for Ivory Coast, coming off the bench to score a dramatic late winner as the Elephants secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their FIFA World Cup Group E clash at the Philadelphia Stadium in Philadelphia in the early hours of Monday morning.
In a contest filled with chances at both ends, it appeared the two sides were destined to settle for a goalless draw until Diallo’s decisive intervention in the closing stages. Ivory Coast started brightly and should have taken the lead in the 17th minute when Bazoumana Toure was sent through on goal, but the forward dragged his effort narrowly wide with only goalkeeper Hernan Galindez to beat.
Ecuador responded positively and twice came close to breaking the deadlock. John Yeboah struck the woodwork in the 24th minute before Alan Minda rattled the crossbar six minutes later as the South Americans threatened to take control.
The Elephants continued to create opportunities of their own. Elye Wahi forced a smart save from Galindez early in the first half, while Nicolas Pepe and Seko Fofana both saw promising efforts denied by a resilient Ecuadorian defence. After the restart, the game opened up even further. Ecuador captain Enner Valencia struck the post just moments into the second half, while Wahi was left frustrated when his powerful volley crashed against the crossbar at the other end.

As the match entered stoppage time, Ivory Coast finally found the breakthrough. Wilfried Singo produced a brilliant run before squaring the ball perfectly for Diallo, who calmly swept his finish beyond Galindez and into the bottom-left corner in the 90th minute to spark wild celebrations among the Ivorian supporters.

Diallo nearly doubled his tally moments later, but Galindez produced a fine save to deny the winger.
