Early coaching change and five key lessons from FKFPL Round 2

Round Two of the 2026-2027 FKF Premier League (FKFPL) delivered it’s first coaching casuality as Kenya Police became the first club to show their tactician the door. The club relieved coach Nicholas Muyoti and his assistant John Baraza of their duties following their 2-1 loss to AFC Leopards.

Their fate was sealed on Monday when Police lost to Ingwe at the Nyayo National Stadium, result that saw the 2024-2025 champions extend their winless start, having kicked off with a 1-1 draw against Migori Youth. Beyond the early coaching change, the round witness other interesting twists and turns as clubs continue to generate early momentum. Played over four days, the nine matches offered a glimpse into the title race, exposed weaknesses among some of the potential contenders and raised concerns for teams already struggling to keep pace.

Kenya’s most popular clubs, Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards and Shabana FC, were all in action, with each recording different results. Meanwhile, the Mozzart Bet-backed quartet of Kakamega Homeboyz, APS Bomet, 3K FC and Migori Youth experienced mixed fortunes.

Here are the key lessons from Match Week Two.Gor Mahia’s characterDefending champions Gor Mahia demonstrated their determination to collect maximum points after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over APS Bomet.

The match, played at Raila Odinga Stadium, was affected by a visibly neglected playing surface and heavy rainfall in Homa Bay, conditions that made it difficult for either side to produce fluent, possession-based football.

APS Bomet head coach Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo also made life difficult for Gor Mahia by deploying a compact mid-to-low defensive block, with his midfielders staying close together and wide players receiving additional defensive support to limit K’Ogalo’s attacking threat. Gor Mahia struggled to break down their opponents for much of the contest, but captain Alpha Chris Onyango stepped up in the 85th minute, unleashing a spectacular strike to settle the match.

The goal came from what was barely Gor Mahia’s only shot on target, underlining the importance of taking chances in difficult matches.Ultimately, the champions secured the three points, reinforcing the view that winning matters most, regardless of the circumstances.

AFC Leopards find way to roar in hostile conditions

Leopards finally registered their first win of the season after edging Kenya Police FC 2-1 in a dramatic encounter that went down to the closing moments. The Kenyan giants endured a challenging afternoon against the Law Enforcers, missing several opportunities in the first half and finding themselves embroiled in controversy shortly before the break. In the 44th minute, Leopards believed Tyson Otieno had scored after his effort appeared to cross the goal line.

However, the match officials allowed play to continue, prompting angry reactions from supporters, some of whom threw objects at the officials at half-time and full-time.On the pitch, Kevin Luke Otiala scored his first goal for Ingwe, only for Elvis Rupia to cancel it out with an equaliser for Kenya Police.

With the match seemingly heading towards a draw, substitute Ronald Sichenje struck in the 92nd minute to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory for Leopards. The late winner handed Ingwe maximum points and demonstrated their ability to overcome difficult circumstances, even when the odds appear stacked against them.

Playing home matches away hurting Shabana?

Shabana FC were held to a goalless draw by Nairobi United in their first home fixture at Afraha Stadium. The match was played at Afraha as Gusii Stadium, which has served as traditional home for Shabana, remains a construction site. If Shabana are to mount a serious challenge for the league title this season, they must quickly adapt to their temporary home and recreate the atmosphere that made Gusii Stadium such a formidable venue.

The goals have propelled Lopaga to the top of the league’s scoring chart, highlighting his growing influence in Murang’a Seal’s attack.Coach Dennis Odhiambo will be encouraged by the forward’s form as the team looks to build on its impressive start to the campaign.
