The Kitale side, which won the regional title in Kakamega last year, wasted little time announcing their intentions as they began their title defense.Ng'iya Girls also opened their campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Uganda's Namagunga, while Nyamira Girls produced one of the biggest Kenyan wins of the day, defeating hosts Arusha Meru 6-0.FEASSSA: Hapless Yala fall to record champions Kitende in Group B openerIn girls' basketball 5×5, Kaya Tiwi made an emphatic start, cruising to a 90-49 victory over Tanzania's Uru Community.Kenya's girls' handball campaign also began on a positive note, with defending champions Moi Girls Kamusinga defeating fellow Kenyan side Nyakach Girls 36-25.The other Kenyan girls' handball representative, St Joseph's Girls Kitale, had a tougher opening, losing 40-34 to Uganda's Gombe Secondary School.Uganda also dominated several of the day's handball encounters, with Kawanda Secondary School beating Tanzania's Kazima Secondary 53-20 and Tanzania's Dongoya overcoming Uganda's Kibuli Secondary School 43-29.In boys' handball, the opening results offered a warning of the challenge facing the Kenyan representatives. Matuu Memorial suffered a 40-23 defeat against Uganda's Gombe Secondary School, while St Joseph's Boys Kitale went down 43-35 to Wampeewo Ntaake Secondary School of Uganda. The Kenyan boys will therefore have plenty to improve on as the competition develops, with Uganda's physical and tactical strength already evident in the opening encounters. The boys' basketball competition also saw Uganda make a strong start. St Cyprian High School defeated Tanzania's Nsumba Secondary 77-43, while Amus College were emphatic 102-27 winners over The School of St Jude. The opening day's volleyball action produced closely fought contests, particularly in the boys' competition. Uganda's Seroma defeated Mengele 3-2 after a five-set battle, while Namugongo edged Kenya's Chepsaita 3-2 in another tight encounter. The girls' competition also produced a five-set contest, with Soweto overcoming Mwitoti 3-2, while Kesogon made a winning start against Lumala with a straight-set victory.Netball provided another statement of Uganda's strength, with defending champions St Mary's Kitende defeating Kenya's Bukhokholo 77-26.Rugby 15s also began with Uganda's Jinja Secondary School defeating Tanzania's Elerai 31-0, while Kenya's Upper Hill recorded a 25-10 victory over Uganda's St Mary's College Kisubi. Upper Hill's victory is an early indication of Kenya’s ambitions to reclaim the KSSSA national rugby 15s title won by Kisii School last year.Day One Results:Boys' VolleyballSeroma (Ug) 2–3 Mengele (21–25, 25–21, 25–22, 23–25, 8–15)Namugongo (Ug) 3–2 Chepsaita (Ke) (21–25, 25–21, 16–25, 25–19, 15–11)Girls' VolleyballKesogon (Ke) 3–0 Lumala (25–3, 25–7, 25–12)Soweto 2–3 Mwitoti (25–20, 15–25, 21–25, 25–13, 8–15)Boys' HandballGombe Secondary School (Ug) 40–23 Matuu Memorial (Ke)Kikuyu (Tz) 35–37 Mbogo Mixed SS (Ug)St. Joseph's Boys Kitale (Ke) 35–43 Wampeewo Ntaake SS (Ug)Girls' HandballMoi Girls Kamusinga (Ke) 36–25 Nyakach Girls (Ke)Kazima Secondary (Tz) 20–53 Kawanda Secondary School (Ug)Kibuli SS (Ug) 29–43 Dongoya (Tz)St. Joseph's Girls Kitale (Ke) 34–40 Gombe SS (Ug)Girls' Basketball 5x5Kaya Tiwi (Ke) 90–49 Uru Community (Tz)St. Mary's Kitende (Ug) 63–47 Nabisunsa Girls (Ug)Boys' BasketballNsumba Secondary (Tz) 43–77 St. Cyprian High School (Ug)Amus College (Ug) 102–27 The School of St. Jude (Tz)Girls' HockeyNamagunga (Ug) 0–1 Ng'iya Girls (Ke)Benjamin Mkapa HS (Tz) 0–4 St. Joseph's Girls Kitale (Ke)Nyamira Girls (Ke) 6–0 Arusha Meru (Tz)Gayaza (Ug) 0–5 Kakungulu Memorial (Ug)Rugby 15s BoysJinja SS (Ug) 31–0 Elerai (Tz)Upper Hill (Ke) 25–10 St. Mary's College Kisubi (Ug)NetballSt. Mary's Kitende (Ug) 77–26 Bukhokholo (Ke)
