Kenya’s successful bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships was built on more than its celebrated distance-running tradition.
When World Athletics President Sebastian Coe announced Nairobi as the host city during the organisation’s Council meeting in Budapest, Hungary, on Tuesday, 15 September, the decision marked the culmination of a campaign that brought together Kenya’s athletics heritage, a passionate home audience, improved infrastructure and a promise to deliver the sport’s biggest championship on African soil for the first time.Nairobi emerged ahead of London and Rome for the 2029 edition, while Munich was awarded the 2031 championships. The decision followed what World Athletics described as one of the strongest bidding processes in the history of the flagship event. For Kenya, it was also a second attempt at securing the championships after Nairobi lost the 2025 hosting rights to Tokyo.
This time, however, the bid addressed some of the weaknesses that had undermined the earlier campaign.One of Nairobi’s biggest advantages was the country’s extraordinary relationship with athletics.Kenya is the second-most successful country in World Athletics Championships history and finished second on the medal table at the 2025 edition in Tokyo after collecting seven gold medals and 11 medals overall.Its record has been shaped largely by generations of middle and long-distance runners, with athletes such as Eliud Kipchoge, David Rudisha, Faith Kipyegon, Hellen Obiri, Vivian Cheruiyot, Paul Tergat and Tegla Loroupe becoming global figures.
Coe pointed directly to that history when explaining the decision, describing athletics as being “woven into the fabric” of Kenya and saying the country’s athletes had helped shape the history of the sport.Kipchoge, a two-time Olympic marathon champion, was also involved in lobbying efforts around Kenya’s bid.

Kenya recorded the highest net promoter score among the markets surveyed, while athletics ranked as the country’s second-most-followed sport behind football.
Kenya also ranked fourth globally for followers of World Athletics’ social media channels.That level of interest had already been demonstrated at Kasarani.When Nairobi hosted the World Under-18 Championships in 2017, the stadium attracted large crowds throughout the competition. Kenya subsequently hosted the World Under-20 Championships in 2021 and has continued to stage the Kip Keino Classic, which became part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series in 2020.
Those events gave Nairobi something its previous 2025 bid lacked: a growing record of successfully delivering international athletics competitions.Infrastructure was one of the major issues surrounding Nairobi’s unsuccessful 2025 bid. For the 2029 campaign, Kenya was able to present a very different picture.The 48,000-capacity Kasarani Stadium is undergoing a complete structural overhaul ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania. The 2027 AFCON will effectively allow Nairobi to test its upgraded stadium, transport systems, security arrangements, crowd management and wider event operations two years before the athletics championships.That is an important part of the learning curve for a country preparing to host an event of World Championships scale.Nairobi’s previous experience also helped. Beyond the two World Junior-level championships, Kenya has hosted other major international athletics competitions, giving officials and organisers experience of working with global governing bodies and elite athletes.
World Athletics’ decision was not simply about having a refurbished venue.The athletics governing body said Nairobi’s bid combined operational planning and financial guarantees with the renovated Kasarani Stadium and a broader vision for the first World Championships in Africa.That continental dimension was central to the successful campaign.The 2027 championships will be staged in Beijing, while Nairobi will bring the event to Africa in 2029 before Munich takes it back to Europe in 2031. World Athletics said the sequence supports its objective of taking the championships across different regions and growing the sport globally.

The 2029 victory is particularly significant because Kenya had already experienced disappointment in its previous attempt.Nairobi’s bid for the 2025 World Championships ultimately lost out to Tokyo. The failed campaign highlighted the need for stronger facilities and a more convincing hosting proposal. Rather than abandoning the ambition, Kenya returned to the bidding process with a proposal built around lessons from the first attempt.

The Kasarani upgrade became a major part of that story, while the country’s continued success in athletics and its experience hosting international competitions strengthened the case.World Athletics’ bidding calendar required final bid submissions by the end of August 2026, with the host cities scheduled to be selected in September.By the time the Council met in Budapest, Nairobi had presented itself not merely as a passionate athletics nation, but as a country with a growing track record of hosting major events and a venue undergoing a significant transformation.
