Kakamega Homeboyz midfielder reveals reason for slow league start

Kakamega Homeboyz assistant captain Glen Otunga has attributed the club's slow start in the FKF Premier League campaign to a lack of cohesion following significant changes to the squad during the transfer window. The Kakamega-based outfit undertook a major rebuilding exercise ahead of the season, recruiting more than 15 players to replace a similar number of departures as they sought to assemble a squad capable of challenging for the league title.Download our Mozzart Sport app for more newsThe recruitment drive brought together experienced campaigners and promising young talents, but the integration process has proved challenging in the opening rounds.Homeboyz began the campaign positively, edging league newcomers Mombasa United 1-0 at Mbaraki before settling for a 1-1 draw against four-time league champions Ulinzi Stars. However, the 2023 Mozzart Bet Cup winners have since suffered consecutive defeats, losing 1-0 to defending champions Gor Mahia before going down 2-0 to AFC Leopards in last weekend's Ingwe Derby.FKFPL: Embu's 3K face AFC Leopards' test at home in highlight clashThe run has left Edward Manoah's charges without a win in three successive matches, dropping from second place to the relegation zone with four points, three above bottom-placed Mombasa United.Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Otunga identified the time required for the new-look squad to develop an understanding as the main obstacle, although he believes the team is gradually finding its footing."I think the main issue has been the gelling process. We have a well-blended squad, and the management did a good job with recruitment. However, fully integrating the players has been a major challenge, and I think it has affected us in recent matches. Nonetheless, we have started understanding each other better, and once we find our rhythm, I am certain we will be a force to reckon with," he said.##NAJAVA_MECA_10095197##The former Michael Olunga Football Academy (MOFA) midfielder acknowledged the pressure created by their recent slump but insisted the team must respond when they host an in-form Kenya Police FC on Sunday, 8 November at Bukhungu Stadium."We had a bright start, but we have stumbled in the last three matches, which has been a concern. Those results have put us under pressure to halt the run. We have to respond on Sunday. Police are in good form and have recently found their rhythm, so it will not be an easy match. However, we have no option but to respond, and we are determined not to lose again at home," he added.Homeboyz will be seeking their second league victory of the season against Police, with a win potentially lifting them to seven points as they look to revive their campaign.12 dropped as Benni McCarthy names final Harambee Stars squad for South Africa double-header
