There's no such thing as a cursed player, right? Of course, but some coincidences are impossible to ignore. Like the one involving Mateus Fernandes, Tottenham Hotspur's latest acquisition, who joined Roberto De Zerbi's side from West Ham before the season began. The 22-year-old Portuguese midfielder left the Hammers after they were relegated to the EFL Championship after finishing 18th on the Premier League table, just two points below the aforementioned Spurs.Mateus Fernandes: 24/25 – Southampton: relegated 25/26 – West Ham: relegated 26/27 – Spurs: pic.twitter.com/vj72H5Zy0u— 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐝𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩. (@UnitedProp) August 29, 2026 What's interesting is that Fernandes previously joined West Ham from Southampton, after the Saints were also relegated from the EPL at the end of the 2024/25 season. The fact that his newest club, Tottenham, are already rock bottom after only two games into the new season has raised a few eyebrows, as the North London side are obviously heading into a stressful campaign full of doubts and struggles. Still, it's a long way to go, but these two opening losses have triggered relegation bells. For Spurs, it would be a devastating outcome after spending a fortune in this transfer window; on the other hand, Fernandes could be facing a rather unusual, almost unique achievement of a relegation hat-trick, which would be a severe stain on his career, even though he's surely not the one to blame for such shortcomings.##NAJAVA_MECA_9922053##The new Spurs midfielder has already impressed with his work rate, marking and sharpness on the ball, while his ability to fire passes through the lines has added something Tottenham have arguably lacked in midfield for years.Still, two games are nowhere near enough to judge an £85m transfer.PREMIER LEAGUE – MATCHDAY 2FridayCrystal Palace – Manchester City 1-4 (0-1)/Donnarumma 56 og – Haaland 17, 84, Cherki 54, 59/SaturdayLiverpool – Nottingham Forest 2-2 (0-1)/Isak 60, Munoz 82 – Ndoye 24, Gibbs-White 70 pen/Bournemouth – Everton 1-1 (1-0)/Scott 41 – Tarkowski 90+1/Coventry – Hull 0-1 (0-0)/Millar 82/Tottenham – Newcastle 0-2 (0-0)/Elanga 62, Wissa 72/SundayChelsea – Brighton 4-3 (3-1)/Lavia 4, Neto 14, Pedro 32, Palmer 74 – Yalcouye 35, Pedro 63 og, Gross 90+6/Leeds – Brentford 1-1 (0-1)/Calvert-Lewin 79 – Schade 41/Sunderland – Fulham 1-0 (0-0)/Isidor 75/Manchester United – Ipswich Town 5-2 (1-1)/Fernandes 40, 61 pen, 68, Greaves 56 og, Mbeumo 82 – Davis 29, Akpom 90+1/Monday22.00: (6.25) Aston Villa (4.00) Arsenal (1.55)***odds are subject to change***
