Kenya will, for the first time in history, send four boys’ and a similar number of girls’ football teams to the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games after the regional body approved an increase in the country’s allocation, Mozzart Sport can exclusively reveal.
The development comes just days after Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) president Kipchumba Maiyo appealed to the Ministry of Education during the opening ceremony of the 2026 National Games to engage FEASSSA and push for more qualification slots for Kenyan schools. Mozzart Sport has now established that FEASSSA has approved the request, meaning all four football semifinalists at this year’s KSSSA National Games have automatically secured tickets to the regional championship in Morogoro, Tanzania.
Last year, Kenya had three qualification slots in football, although a fourth boys’ team, Butere Boys, also featured because they were the host county. In the boys’ competition, Menengai High School, Takaba Mixed Secondary School, St Mary’s Yala and Kakamega High School have all qualified for the East Africa Games. Takaba have also made history by becoming the first school from Kenya’s North Eastern region to qualify for the regional championship.
In the girls’ category, Nyakach Girls, Raila Educational Centre, JOGA and Archbishop Njenga have all booked their places at the regional showpiece.Each football team will be allowed to register a maximum of 20 players.Volleyball has also received an increased allocation, with Kenya set to field three teams in both the girls’ and boys’ competitions. Each team will be limited to 14 players.
Netball has been allocated four slots in the girls’ category, meaning all semifinalists will qualify for the regional championship.Handball will have three slots each in the girls’ and boys’ categories, with every team allowed to register 14 players.Hockey has also been allocated three slots for both girls and boys, with each team permitted to register 20 players.KSSSA: St Mary’s Yala out to repay Michael Olunga’s faith with historic national titleAthletics will have one slot each for girls and boys, with every team allowed a squad of 20 athletes.Badminton, lawn tennis and table tennis will each have three slots in both the girls’ and boys’ categories, with teams limited to six players.Swimming will have one slot each for girls and boys, with every team allowed to register 20 swimmers.
Basketball 3×3 will have three slots in both categories, with teams limited to five players, while basketball 5×5 will also have three slots for girls and boys, with each team allowed 12 players. Rugby Sevens has been allocated three slots each in the girls’ and boys’ competitions, with teams permitted to register 12 players.Rugby 15s will also have three slots in both categories, with each squad allowed 25 players.
Chess and Scrabble will each have three slots in the girls’ and boys’ competitions, with teams comprising six players. Beach soccer will have three slots in both categories, with every team allowed 12 players, while beach volleyball will also have three slots each for girls and boys, with teams restricted to three players. Lacrosse and cricket have each been allocated three slots in both the girls’ and boys’ competitions, with every team allowed 12 players. Cross country will have one slot each for girls and boys, with teams allowed six athletes.
Baseball and softball will each have three slots in both the girls’ and boys’ categories, with every team permitted to register 15 players.The 2026 FEASSSA Games will be held in Morogoro, Tanzania, from Wednesday, 12 to Sunday, 23 August.
Teams representing Kenya in the Term One disciplines are expected to report to M-Pesa Foundation Academy on Friday, 7 August, for a four-day residential training camp before departing for Tanzania. Kenya head into this year’s championship as the defending overall champions of the East Africa Games.
