Gor Mahia legend Anthony ‘Teddy’ Akumu was left surprised by the massive margin with which the record FKF Premier League champions lost to Egyptian moneybags Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League preliminary first-round match.
The reigning league champions were annihilated 7-1 on aggregate after being thumped 5-1 in the return leg before suffering a 2-0 loss in the first leg at home. According to the former Gor Mahia midfielder, the Kenyan champions should not be losing by such margins, believing that the club has got it totally wrong in many aspects of football.“In this day, Gor Mahia should be losing by no more than two goals at this level. They have been champions of Kenya for a long time, and it must show when they go out.
For me, it shows that they still have not got it right in very basic areas of football management,” he said. Akumu pointed out that Pyramids FC have been a mid-table team in the Egyptian league over the last four years and have only come up recently, which means that they are doing something right that Gor Mahia can learn from.

“For a long time, when we talked about Egypt, we knew clubs like Zamalek and Al-Ahly. But Pyramids have been making a lot of progress in the last two years, and see where they are.One of the things Gor Mahia must now do is to run the club like a business if they are to avoid such embarrassing results. They are the Kenyan champions and every time they come out of a match, the fans must feel like they have tried and given their best.
The club management must change the whole approach and realise that Gor Mahia is a brand and should be treated as such. They must not just play football for the sake of it but must have a plan to guide them to the top level.”Akumu is currently in the country after his contract at Nejmeh in Beirut, Lebanon, ended two months ago.
