Kenya Legends to face South Africa in historic 2027 series

Kenya Legends will face South Africa Rugby Legends in a two-leg series in 2027. This marks the first time the veterans’ rugby competition will expand beyond East Africa. The series will kick off in Nairobi on Saturday, 8 May, 2027, before Kenya travels to Cape Town for the return fixture on Saturday, 4 July. The venue for the Nairobi match will be announced at a later date.

The expansion presents a new challenge for Kenya Legends, who have dominated the competition since its launch in 2023, when they began facing Uganda in the annual series. Kenya won the first four editions, although Uganda came close to ending that run in 2026 after securing their maiden victory over the Kenyan side, edging them 16-15 in Mombasa. However, Kenya responded in the return leg in Kampala, winning 17-10 to retain the title with a 32-26 aggregate victory.

The introduction of South Africa Rugby Legends adds a new dimension to the competition, bringing together former players from two nations with rich rugby histories while creating an opportunity to strengthen ties between the two rugby communities.

South Africa are expected to field a strong squad featuring celebrated former players, including Rugby World Cup winners and World Rugby Hall of Famers. The squads for both teams will be announced closer to the matches.

Kenya Legends captain Eddie Omondi believes the series will help grow the veterans’ game and allow supporters to reconnect with some of rugby’s most memorable names.“Veterans rugby has a passionate global following, and this series is a big step in growing that following in East and Southern Africa. Bringing South Africa Rugby Legends to Nairobi, and then taking our side to Cape Town, gives fans the chance to see legends of the game up close and be part of something bigger,” Omondi said.

Further details, including the Nairobi venue, ticketing arrangements and match-day activities, will be announced in the coming months.
