The long-standing flirtation between Cristian Romero and Atletico Madrid has finally come to an end after more than two years. Los Colchoneros launched another offensive for the Argentina international this summer and, according to British Sky Sports, there are no obstacles remaining — “Cuti” Romero will become a new Atletico player, finally fulfilling Diego Simeone’s wish. Atletico will pay Tottenham 35 million euros up front, with a further five million in bonuses, while Spurs will also retain 15% of any future sale. Simeone has never hidden his admiration for his compatriot and had already told Atletico’s hierarchy last June that he wanted Romero in his squad. The first serious contacts were established back in 2024 after the Copa America, while Romero himself spoke in May last year about his desire to play in La Liga.Spurs: Pride, belief and captain’s betrayalThe main obstacle at the time was Tottenham’s 70 million euros asking price, which forced Atletico to explore other options. That did not cool their interest, however, and the Madrid club returned for Romero this August, although they faced competition from Inter Lautaro Martínez and Javier Zanetti even tried to persuade Romero to join Inter, but their efforts were not enough. Inter eventually withdrew from the race and turned their attention to signing Djed Spence, once it became increasingly clear that Romero was heading to Madrid.Ex Chelsea captain leaves Atletico, world champion to arriveRomero will sign a contract with Atletico until 2029, reportedly earning seven million euros per year. Tottenham were not opposed to letting their captain leave, provided an adequate offer arrived. Atletico initially offered 30 million including bonuses, which did not satisfy the London club. Once the improved offer arrived, however, there was no longer any doubt: Tottenham agreed to the deal. After more than two years of flirting, Romero and Atletico Madrid have finally got their wish.##NAJAVA_MECA_9889938##
